The Story
While I was in Haiti I noticed the women collecting scraps of paper. They kept can labels, old newspapers., magazines often looking in the trash we Americans left. I was curious as to what they were using them for. One day at Market I saw a woman sitting on the ground rolling paper into beads. I was absolutely amazed and in awe. What I would consider trash she had turned it into beautiful jewerly.
I was captivated and she offered to teach me. We did not share a common language but we shared
smiles and laughter. After returning home I began collecting my own 'trash' often pulling things (like old calendars out of the trash can. I made a long chain for my 92 year old grandmother who was so excited because she said her great grandmother rolled beads to make curtains in her parlour.
So it Started.
